Kilmer Center Tiger Tales      Art and Music Show: Tomorrow May 17

Kilmer Center School will be holding our annual Art and Music show on Friday, May 17, 2024.  Musical performances will be from 10-11 and the art exhibitions will be open 30 minutes before and after the performances.

Kilmer Center Learning Space

Dear Kilmer Center School Families,

We have a vision to create a vibrant outdoor learning space for all students to access at Kilmer Center School.  This learning space will be constructed directly beside our school building with a designated walkway directly leading to the learning space.  The learning space will be a large area consisting of beautiful pavers and brick.

A special element of this space is it will enable us to memorialize past students.  Families can have their child's name engraved on a commemorative brick, permanently displayed within the learning space. Additionally, we're incorporating a beautiful central grassy area perfect for planting seasonal flowers, fostering a connection with nature and beautifying the space. We have a vision to add seating options to provide a comfortable and peaceful place to embrace the tranquil setting.

This exciting project will benefit not only our students but also the entire Kilmer Center community. Your tax-deductible donation will play a crucial role in bringing this vision to life.

Scan the included QR code or click here to make your contribution today.

Thank you for your support in creating a lasting impact on our school and fostering a love for learning in our students!

Sincerely,

Hoang H Nguyen

Principal

Kilmer Center School

Jill's House/Kilmer Center School Parent Support Group Monday, May 20th 7pm - 8pm

Parenting children with special needs comes with a whole host of emotions that can be difficult to maneuver. One of the most challenging for many is the isolation they experience.  Join us on Monday to discuss this subject. We'll explore questions such as:

  1. When you think of isolation, what does it mean to you?
  2. When are some times you have felt isolated?
  3. What do you find most difficult about being isolated?
  4. How do you deal with isolation?
  5. What is the opposite of isolation to you?

Strategies to Promote Healthy Sleep in Kids with Disabilities

Wednesday, May 1, 2024
11:00 a.m.

Live, on-line presentation on ZOOM

Sleep is a common area that children struggle with. Alison Moser, M.Ed., BCBA has helped sleep train many children and teens who have difficulty: falling asleep at an appropriate time, staying asleep throughout the night, staying in their bed the entire night, and waking up early. The strategies presented in this webinar are “tried and true” in many research journals over decades of sleep studies. We will review general strategies to help promote healthy sleep while reviewing more detailed strategies depending on what type of sleep difficulties your child is having.

Transition Lunch & Learn

April 17, 2024 - 12:00 noon
Open Discussion

Live, on-line presentation on ZOOM

Planning for the transition from school to adult services can be an overwhelming task. Once your child exits the school system, adult services are based on eligibility criteria and funding availability. These twice-monthly, small group sessions are an opportunity to discuss the challenges and discover resources the help in creating a plan for the future.

It’s never too early to plan; you don’t have to wait until your student is close to graduation. Also, these Lunch & Learns would be a great way for families who started the process but got overwhelmed or stuck to find the motivation to restart the process and press forward.

The Transition Lunch & Learns are held virtually on Zoom. All of The Arc of Northern Virginia's webinar events are FREE to attend, but pre-registration is required.

First Responder & Safety Event Fair

When:  Saturday, April 20, 2024
Time:  11:00 a.m – 2:00 p.m.
Where: Kenmore Middle School
200 S Carlin Springs Rd
Arlington, VA 22204

Admission:  Free but pre-registration is required

A resource fair and practice event with Arlington first responders and community partners to learn about emergency and crisis resources, and practice navigating emergencies. You’ll be able work on creation of the DD identification cards to hand to first responders to identify a disability in the event of an emergency. You can also work with first responders to role play a variety of situations and ask questions about how you can navigate emergencies safely.

For the first time, staff from the Marcus Alert team will join the event. They can help you set up an emergency health profile. The Emergency Health Profile allows individuals to voluntarily create a free emergency health profile to provide first responders with their vital health and medical information (behavioral health related information included) when calling 9-1-1 during an emergency or crisis. Individuals over the age of 16 may sign-up for an Emergency Health Profile through the Emergency Health Profile Association. Legal guardians may sign up individuals under the age of 16. This team will also discuss 988 and options to call during a behavioral/mental health emergency, and what you can expect.

The Arc of Northern Virginia’s award winning Tech for Independent Living team will also be present to talk about Arc2Independence, our free customizable app to help people with disabilities learn important life skills, gain more independence, and enhance their personal safety.

🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.

Kilmer Center Tiger Tales      National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Many of you know the great work Andrea, our social worker does, to help connect families to the resources they need. Did you also know that our social worker and psychologist lead lessons in our classrooms to teach students self-regulation, advocacy, and social skills?  Check out some of the calming strategies our students use.

Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey

Parents/caregivers  received the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students. Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

Kilmer Center Tiger Tales      March 5 Presidential Primary

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

Therefore, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. As outlined in Regulation 4421, School Planning Days are directed by school-based Administrators in order to devote time to school improvement efforts, including collaboration around data, common assessments, responsive instruction, etc.

Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.

School Board Adopted Fiscal Year 2025 Advertised Budget

At last week’s regular business meeting, the School Board voted to adopt the Fiscal Year 2025 Advertised Budget

The Advertised Budget is a needs-based budget that represents the funding needed to

support schools in the upcoming year. It focuses on educational excellence for each and every student and competitive compensation for our hard-working, dedicated, and results-driven staff.

The budget is closely aligned with FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which seeks a strong academic start for our youngest students and prepares our graduates for a thriving future. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction.

Learn more about the budget and stay up-to-date by following the budget development calendar.
