ESSER III/SIIP At-a-Glance
The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant, which requires that spending be used in specific areas. Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.
English Language Arts Strategies |
Outcome Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts. |
Goal By June 2023, 100% of students will demonstrate growth with early literacy, as indicated by an increase of 2 skills from baseline on the early literacy skills checklist. |
Strategy 1 Teach essential skills through scaffolding, differentiation and small group instruction. |
Strategy 2 Provide small group instruction to targeted group of students |
Strategy 3 Teach essential skills and strategies through the creation of a library of hands on early literacy materials to be used with a targeted group of students. |
Mathematics Strategies |
Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics. |
Goal: By June 2023, 100% of students will demonstrate growth with early mathematics skills as indicated by an increase of 2 skills from baseline on the early mathematics skills checklist. |

Wellness Strategies |
Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment. |
Goal: By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, Kilmer Center school will utilize Morning Meeting effectively to build relationship skills, as evidenced by an increase in scores on the adapted POG Communicator self-assessment tool for 100% of all students. |
Strategy 1 Align wellness required practices to students strengths and needs and staff background knowledge and academic themes. |
Strategy 2 Provide staff with the foundational training and resources to increase knowledge of SEL and its impact on students.

Strategy 3 Create a culture that includes a welcome and optimistic closing in every classroom |
Portrait of a Graduate (POG) |
Outcome: All students will complete a POG Presentation of Learning (POL) by 2025-26. |
Goal: By the end of the 2022-23 school year, 100% of students will show growth as Communicators on POG self-assessment given at the beginning and end of the school year. |
Strategy 1 Communication Committee will provide explicit professional development focused on improving staff knowledge and fluency surrounding the variety of communication methods students use. |
Strategy 2 Students will have authentic and consistent opportunities to develop and generalize the skills necessary to become proficient communicators. |
Strategy 3 Teach explicit lessons that align with the Adapted POG Communicator Indicators. |
